About this place
Timmelsjoch (Passo del Rombo)
The Timmelsjoch is one of the most spectacular high-mountain roads in the Alps, connecting Austria’s Ötztal Valley with Italy’s South Tyrol region. At 2,509 meters above sea level, it offers a unique blend of sweeping curves, dramatic mountain scenery, and impressive engineering.
The road climbs through rugged alpine terrain, passing waterfalls, rock formations, and panoramic viewpoints that provide breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. Unlike some of the tighter Alpine passes, Timmelsjoch is known for its flowing character and varied landscape, making the journey itself a memorable experience.
Opened as a modern cross-border road in 1968, the pass today features several architectural viewpoints and exhibits that highlight the history, culture, and nature of the region.
Weather conditions can change quickly at this altitude, and the pass is typically open only from late spring to autumn. An early start often rewards visitors with clearer views and lighter traffic.
Timmelsjoch is home to the highest road museum in Europe, with several striking installations spread along the route, turning the crossing into both a scenic and cultural experience.
